Kit for a longer trip

The next trip is going to be an extended one, and I’ll be taking camping kit and sufficient spares. For trips up to a week I normally get by with just a single pannier. This time I have both rear panniers, a pair of low-riders on the front and a bar bag.

Attached to the bike itself are:

  • Tools in a bottle cage
  • Pump
  • Spare tyre on rack
  • Spare spoke
  • Hub dynamo lighting
  • Plenty of water

The front panniers contain

  • Down sleeping bag
  • Sleep mat
  • Tent
  • Survival blanket
  • Towel
  • Mosquito net
  • Deet
  • Water filter

The two panniers weigh 2.75 kg (the one with the tent in) and 1.85 kg (the pannier itself weighs almost as much as the stuff in it).

All the other stuff is in the rear panniers and bar bag. The bar bag is handy for easy access for things like the camera, and it’s quick to take off when going into shops.

  • Toiletries
  • Sun cream
  • Puncture kits, tubes, gear and brake cables, zip ties, brake blocks and lube
  • First aid kit
  • Spare glasses
  • Lock
  • Head torch
  • Chargers and cables
  • Power bank
  • Camera

Clothing is mostly cycling gear:

  • 4 Jerseys, 1 winter weight
  • 2 Merino base layers
  • 4 bib shorts/three-quarter shorts
  • Socks, mitts, gloves
  • Waterproof
  • Hats
  • Civvies: long and short trousers, two T-shirts, underwear, fleece

Weights for the two rear panniers are 3.9 kg and 5.6 kg; the bar bag is 2.0 kg

All-up weight for the fully loaded bike is 31 kg, which seems fine considering it’s a steel frame, the wheels have Sputnik touring rims with a hub generator on the front and hub gears on the rear.
